Tiger Trout: Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve landed here, chances are you’re on the hunt for the elusive tiger trout. This modest fish holds more importance than it may seem, showing up twice on the quest board and playing a role in the master angler's achievement.

While the quests themselves will guide you on when and where to catch tiger trout, they don’t tell the whole story. That’s where this guide steps in—to ensure you know exactly when and where to find them, and how to make the most of your efforts.

Hi, I’m Constantinos from Games on Easy Mode! I create guides for Stardew Valley mainly to help players like you achieve 100% completion without getting lost in the details. If that sounds like your thing, stick around!

Why the Tiger Trout?

The tiger trout is required for the River Bundle in the Fish Tank at the Community Center—our first clue: the river. But beyond bundles, two quests will specifically ask for tiger trout:

  1. A "Help Wanted" quest posted outside Pierre’s shop.
  2. The Aquatic Overpopulation Quest on the Special Orders Board outside the Mayor’s Manor, available in the Fall.

Hint: Both quests appear during the Fall season, which is your big seasonal clue. In fact, Demetrius only requests tiger trout during this time.

Finding the Tiger Trout

After years (both in-game and real-life!) of research, here’s what we know about catching tiger trout:

  • Location: River
  • Season: Fall
  • Time of Day: 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Weather: Any (dry, rainy, or windy days)

This wide availability gives you plenty of time to fish the 10 tiger trout needed for the Aquatic Overpopulation quest, especially since the reward—a Farm Computer recipe—is well worth the effort.

Pro Tip: Use Targeted Bait

Thanks to the 1.6 update, you can craft a bait maker after reaching Fishing Level 6. This handy tool consumes one tiger trout and produces up to 10 targeted bait, significantly increasing your chances of catching more tiger trout. Sacrifice your first 2–3 catches to make bait, and the rest of the quest will be a breeze!

Other Uses for Tiger Trout

Once you’ve fulfilled your quests, here’s what you can do with any leftover tiger trout:

  • As a Gift: Only Willy likes it, so gifting isn’t the best use.
  • Fish Pond: Not worth it—tiger trout always produce roe, with no special drops.
  • Fish Smoker: This new machine (added in 1.6) doubles the fish’s value, making it a solid early-game gold source. You can buy the smoker recipe at Willy’s shop for 10,000g.
  • Sewing: Use it with the sewing machine (yours or Emily’s) to craft an orange-dyed item or a fish-themed shirt.

Final Thoughts

That wraps up everything you need to know about the tiger trout. With this guide, you’re well-equipped to tackle quests, complete bundles, and make the most of this unique fish.
